Why Does My Copier Keep Jamming? A Technician's Diagnostic Guide
A single paper jam is annoying. A copier that jams every 50–100 pages is a problem — and it almost always has a specific, fixable cause. At Pro-Tec Copier Services, we've resolved hundreds of chronic jam issues for Georgia businesses. Here are the nine root causes we see most often and what to do about each.
1. Worn Feed Rollers (Most Common)
Feed rollers are rubber components that grip paper and pull it into the machine. Over time — typically every 100,000–150,000 pages — the rubber glazes over, loses traction, and starts misfeeding.
Fix: Clean rollers with isopropyl alcohol first. If the issue persists, the rollers need replacement — a straightforward service call that typically costs $100–$200.
2. Wrong Paper Type or Weight
Copiers are calibrated for a specific paper weight range (typically 16–28 lb. bond). Paper that's too light, too heavy, or coated for inkjet printers causes jams and poor fusing.
Fix: Check your paper packaging. Use only paper labeled "laser" or "copier" rated at 20–24 lb. for standard jobs.
3. Overfilled Paper Trays
Paper stacked above the max-fill line bows under the rollers, causing misfeeds — especially on the first few sheets of a large job.
Fix: Fill trays to 75% capacity and keep paper fanned before loading.
4. Humidity-Damaged Paper
Paper absorbs moisture from the air, causing sheets to stick together and feed as multiples.
Fix: Store paper in sealed reams in a climate-controlled environment. In Georgia summers, even a few days in an open ream in a humid office can cause feeding problems.
5. Debris in the Paper Path
A single staple, torn paper fragment, or dust buildup in the paper path will trigger jams on every print job until it's removed.
Fix: Open all paper path access panels (not just the jam indicator) and inspect carefully with a flashlight. Even a tiny torn corner triggers jam sensors.
6. Misaligned Paper Guides
If paper guides in the tray are loose or set to the wrong width, paper skews as it feeds — causing jams in the registration area.
Fix: Adjust the guides so they touch (but don't compress) the sides of the paper stack.
7. Fuser Problems
A failing fuser doesn't just wrinkle output — it can also cause paper to stick inside the machine and jam in the exit area.
Fix: If jams consistently occur at the output (exit) area, the fuser is the likely culprit. This requires professional service.
8. Damaged or Incorrectly Loaded Paper
Paper with torn edges, folded corners, or holes (from previous stapling) jams more frequently.
Fix: Inspect paper before loading. Discard any sheets with tears, crimps, or pre-existing holes.
9. ADF (Document Feeder) Misfeeds
Jams that occur only when copying or scanning multi-page originals point to the ADF, not the paper trays.
Fix: Clean the ADF feed rollers and separation pad with isopropyl alcohol. Check that originals are properly aligned and that you're not mixing different paper sizes or weights in the feeder.
